Forum Title: remove vinyl grids on hinged french doors
We are still digging out from Hurricane Katrina and due to my husbands illness, are getting help from a local organization. They are doing a pretty fair job of it but I need to alter a few things to customize our home. I wanted metal or aluminum exterior french doors without grids like we had before but we received wood Jeld Wen doors with grids. What is the best way to treat them to make sure they don't swell or warp and how do I remove the grids without making a mess of it all? The grids are vinyl set on the outsides of the doors. I also need a good source for two 18 french doors that will be used as replacement for standard 36 exterior door. Are there any special requirements for hanging or security locks? Any info on these subjects will be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Stella

Thats interesting...vinyl grids on a wood door? Are you sure its not a fiberglass door? Jeld-wen wood patio doors can be pretty pricey. And the way I read your post, the grids are only on the outside of the glass, not also on the interior side? Thats just a pretty strange combination you have there. I guess it could have been custom or mis-ordered, but still seems just wrong somehow. And I totally agree with JB. Trying to fit 2 18 slabs into an existing frame won't be very cost effective or give a satisfactory result. The cost of the required parts would probably exceed the cost of a prehung unit. Most major manufacturers who make doors will also make the french 36 2 door units. You'll have to check around and see whats available in your area. Looks like Jeld-Wen is at least one.
